This Heineken Draught Keg Cooler and display is a perfect example of how rotational molding and its unlimited design potential can be used to create an effective and attractive POP display.
The objective was to produce a unit that duplicated the look of the new to the market 5 liter Heineken draught keg in shape, color and texture. In addition the unit would be required to hold up to 250 pounds of refrigerator and beer products over an extended period of time and in a variety of environmental conditions.
The complex and tight tolerance molding was accomplished using machined aluminum molds.
The main keg required a 6 piece mold in order to hide any parting lines. It was molded from a specially formulated silver metallic LLDPE which closely replicated the aluminum of the real keg.
The top ring was also a 6 piece mold with 4 removable pieces which yielded undercuts for attachment to the keg by snap fit and permitted the use of no secondary attachment hardware.
Three separate molded pieces were attached to each other and to the keg to form the top handle lever and the silver spout. All hardware for this assembly and the entire keg assembly had to be concealed. All witness lines (parting lines) had to be concealed as well.
The finished product was assembled by Gregstrom Corporation from 40 off-the-shelf hardware components, 5 custom fabricated components and 5 rotationally molded parts and was packed and shipped directly to Heineken distributors.
